Area

Keyboard: AREA
Alias: AA
Measures the area and perimeter of defined areas or entities.
NOTE The area and perimeter measured by the Area command are stored in the AREA and PERIMETER system variables.
[Entity/Add/Subtract]/<First point>: To get the measurements of defined areas, specify an initial point. To get measurements of a single entity, choose Entity. To get the total measurements of subsequent areas that you specify, choose Add. To subtract areas and perimeters from total measurements, choose Subtract.
To calculate the area by specifying points
- Specify the first point of the area to be calculated.
- Specify the second point.
- Specify the third point.
Specify the start point of the area you want to calculate.
<Next point>: Specify the second point of the area you want to calculate. Continue to specify points. Right-click or press Enter when done. All points must be in the x,y plane. The area and perimeter are displayed in the command bar or in the Prompt History window.
To calculate the area of a selected entity
Entities that you can select to calculate the area and/or perimeter include circles, lines, arcs, ellipses, polylines, polygons, splines, 3D solids, and planes.
- Select the entity for the area you want to calculate.
Choose Entity.
Select entity for area calculation: Select the entity that you want to measure.
For a circle, polygon, or polyline, the result is similar to:
Area = 6.4033 sq. units, Perimeter = 8.9703
For a 3D solid, surface, the result is similar to:
Area = 49.791264 sq. units, Perimeter = 0.0000
For an arc or line, the result is similar to:
Area = 0.000000 sq. units, Perimeter = 16.5481
The area of open polylines is calculated as if the endpoint of the last segment drawn is connected to the start point of the first segment; however, the length to close the polyline is ignored when the perimeter is calculated.
For polylines with width, the Area command calculates the area and length based on the centerline of wide polyline segments.
To add and subtract areas
You can add and subtract areas to keep a running total of the area and perimeter calculations.
- Select the first area to be calculated.
- Select an entity to add or subtract from the total area.
- Select another entity to add or subtract from the total area.
Choose Add or Subtract.
If you choose Add, the following prompt displays:
Adding: [Entity/Subtract] <First point>: Start to specify points to define the first area that you want to add to calculations, then press Enter when done. Continue to specify points to define more areas to include in calculations. To calculate the area of multiple entities, choose Entity. Select entities to calculate the area of your selections. The running total area is updated each time a new area is added or entity is included in the selection set. To subtract an area while adding an area, choose Subtract.
If you choose Subtract, the following prompt displays:
Subtracting: [Entity/Add] <First point>: Start to specify points to define an area that represents the total area and perimeter, then press Enter when finished. Specify points to define the area that you want to subtract from the total measurements. To select an entity to subtract, choose Entity. To add an area while subtracting, choose Add.
